IMPERMANENCE

For most of us this title refers to Buddhist philosophy and it is no coincidence that I chose it for another important stage in my photographic work. Another initiatory journey just as rich as that of the Invitation, my first adventure among sharks.

This series was shot on the same spot in Ho’Okena Bay, on the threshold between the land and the sea, and illustrates the continuous metamorphosis of the seascape shaped by the power of the ocean.

My preference is black and white photography, and I did hesitate for a long time before using color. After careful consideration it became obvious that I could not ignore this parameter because it was an intrinsic part of the elements of change in the interpretation of the landscape. In addition, the softness of the morning lights, whatever the dominant tones, got the better of my last reservations.

The first images I captured were quite approximate, I had to better understand what caused the infinite variations of materials, colors and movements and I had to work on controling my own movements and breathing with the changing rhythm of the phenomena.

It is undoubtedly the first time that I dove so deeply into a subject and that I patiently studied each component. The combinations are endless according to the power of the wind, its direction, the turbidity of the water of the passage of each wave, of the surf. I came to understand how to take advantage of every situation and intervene at the right time.

The natural beauty that was offered to me during these months is in my eyes richer than all the terrestrial landscapes that I have been able to observe.
